The biosciences doctoral program prepares students to conduct research on the pressing biomedical and environmental problems of the binational El Paso-Ciudad Juárez metroplex and the nation. The program emphasizes the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, the toxic and carcinogenic effects of environmental pollutants, neurological and metabolic disorders, and environmental biology.

As an undergraduate, Aimee Hernandez-Gaytan began exploring her interest in science education through poster presentations, research publications and community outreach. Now, as a third yeard Ph.D. candidate, Aimee has scaled her impact. She has served as a lab instructor for multiple biology courses and has created her own biology course, which she teaches in coordination with local Boys and Girls Club of America chapters. She has also worked with faculty on studies related to ethical research conduct, and course-based undergraduate research experiences. Aimee's ultimate goal is to enter a leadership role in biology education.
Graduates from the Â鶹¹ÙÍø doctoral program in biosciences will have acquired extensive skills in hands-on laboratory work, data analysis, research, ethical and social issues, and biomedical informatics.
