Students in the M.A. in Rhetoric and Writing Studies program examine theoretical and practical elements of rhetoric. Courses in rhetorical theory, multimodal writing, professional and technical writing, and persuasion provide tools to analyze contexts, use cutting-edge writing technologies and produce effective texts for different purposes and audiences.
The degree helps students enhance writing they do on the job.
Courses focus on topics such as grant writing, visual communication, community-based writing and transnational writing.
The program offers some courses – editing, grant writing, professional writing and technical writing – online.
El Pasoan Lauren Uribarri taught high school English to share her passion for reading and writing. She enrolled in this program to become a dual-credit teacher. She is now a student activities director who uses her rhetoric skills to think critically and communicate clearly. Her next goal is to earn a Ph.D. and work in higher education.
Graduates can enter the workforce as technical or professional writers or teach writing. Still others pursue a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition.
