Clinical and Interdisciplinary Education
The Paso del Norte region is federally designated as a health professional shortage area. The College of Health Sciences was established to respond to this shortage. Benefiting from affilitation agreements with over 350 local and national clinical training facilities, our students receive hands-on practicum experience and community engagement throughout their education.
To complement the practical experience offered by community partners through internships and clinical rotations, CHS faculty members frequently incorporate the use of simulation scenarios within their lesson plans, using technology available in the Health Sciences and Nursing Building’s state-of-the-art 16,000 square-foot Center for Simulation. Filmed simulated scenarios enable faculty to review and critique students’ problem solving skills, while simulated “Hospital Days” and other interprofessional learning experiences provide students with opportunities to work in multidisciplinary teams.
Faculty researchers in the College of Health Sciences investigating clinical education and professional development theory are contributing to the body of knowledge within these fields and have many specializations, including learning and simulation strategies; virtual technology and learning; interprofessional education; and the integration of the Spanish language into the curriculum.
