Our department holds a rich legacy dating back to 1914 when it was established as part of the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy at El Paso. This journey continued, and in 1919, it transformed into the College of Mines and Metallurgy, marking it as the second oldest academic program within the University of Texas System.
Throughout its storied history, the department's commitment to excellence has remained unwavering. Our degrees have evolved in tandem with the advancing landscape of engineering. The B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering, introduced in 1957, transitioned to the B.S. degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering around 1987. This shift was inspired by the recognition of "materials" as a pivotal focus at Â鶹¹ÙÍø, highlighting the strategic importance of this field. It's worth noting that the B.S. in MME has proudly held accreditation since 1991, a testament to our dedication to providing quality education.
As we look to the future, our department continues to shape innovative engineers who stand at the crossroads of science, technology, and creativity.
